The Division of Public Safety and Security conducts all police and security operations at the university (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint) and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This position is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of the University of Michigan's facilities. Your primary responsibility will be supervising a team of Security Officers and managing the shift in your area of assignment. You will be primarily assigned to DPSS Michigan Medicine Safety & Security, located at 1500 E. Medical Center Dr., Ann Arbor, MI, but may be deployed for similar assignments throughout the University of Michigan campus. This position involves monitoring and operating weapons detection systems, including safeguarding the employees, visitors, and guests.
Provide direct supervision to a team of security officers, including:
Coaching
Performance Management
Discipline
Investigations
Payroll
Scheduling
Document Review
Training
Other Supervisory tasks as assigned
Work closely with the department's lieutenants and command staff to ensure the successful, smooth, exemplary operation of this department.
Provide shift briefings, handle scheduling issues, and perform other supervisory duties as needed.
Act as a liaison between hospital administration, other university departments, police agencies, and fire department officials.
Ensure a culture of prioritizing the community by providing exceptional customer service and fostering non-traditional community connections.
This is a uniformed position that may be called upon to perform any duty that security officers are expected to perform. These include, but are not limited to:
Patrol assigned areas, observe suspicious activities and persons.
Provide general assistance and information to the staff and public.
Conduct both preliminary and in-depth investigations, prepare incident reports, and maintain strict confidentiality of all information gathered.
Complete special projects and oversee other specific areas of responsibility.
Work closely with the other departments in the division and with division administration.
Other duties as assigned.
This position will primarily work the midnight shift. However, the person(s) filling this position must remain flexible and may be called upon to work with other shifts and overtime.
High school or GED equivalent + 7 years relevant experience as a security professional (with 3 years in related leadership roles)
OR,
Associate degree + 5 years relevant experience as a security professional (with 3 years in related leadership roles)
OR,
Bachelor's degree + 3 years relevant experience as a security professional (with 2 years in related leadership roles)
Excellent communication skills and the ability to be a credible witness in court.
Ability to collaborate with a diverse population of partners within academic, research, medical, and business settings.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize assignments and deadlines.
Ability to present ideas and recommendations to peers and management.

Ability to perform in a fast-paced security environment, where confidentiality is critical.
All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
This is a COAM (Command Officers Association of Michigan) union position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Command Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
