Position Summary:
As a member of the Rice University Police Department, the Security Specialist is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment at the Shepherd School of Music. This includes conducting roving patrols of Alice Pratt Brown Hall and Brockman Hall for Opera, ensuring doors are secured, and facilities are properly shut down. The role also involves providing walking escorts for students at closing time, turning off lights in the performance venues, reporting emergency facility issues, as well as reporting suspicious activity/people to RUPD and escorting people to their vehicles upon request.
Workplace Requirements - Must be able to stand, walk, and walk up and down stairs, and occasionally lifts boxes up to 20 pounds. This position will be a uniformed position, will carry an RUPD radio and will report to RUPD.
Working location: Alice Pratt Brown Hall and Brockman Hall for Opera Buildings.
Working hour expectations: Work schedule will be Tuesday - Saturday 5:00 PM - 1:00 AM. There will be casual overtime.
On campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person on the Rice University Campus during any assigned shift to include evening, nights, weekends, and holidays. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.
Hiring Range: $17.50/Hour. Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- No experience required
Licenses / Certifications:
- CPR certification will be required within six months of hire (provided by RUPD)
- Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with no more than three moving violations and/or at fault accidents within the past 36 months, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past three years
Skills:
- The ability to stay calm under pressure and effectively handle emergencies
- Familiarity with security equipment such as surveillance cameras, alarms, and access control systems
- Understanding relevant laws and regulations related to security operations
- Good verbal and written communication
- Ability to develop positive and productive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff of the university
- Ability to perform all assigned functions and duties in an effective, efficient, professional, courteous, and ethical manner with sensitivity to the diversity and uniqueness of the campus community

Essential Functions
- Monitors and authorizes entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises
- Writes reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences
- Calls police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons
- Answers alarms and investigates disturbances
- Circulates among visitors, patrons, or employees to preserve order and protect property
- Patrols premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates
- Escorts individuals to specified locations or to provide personal protection
- Operates detecting devices to screen individuals and prevents passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas
- Answers telephone calls to take messages, answers questions, and provides information during non-business hours
- Warns persons of rule infractions or violations, and evicts violators from premises, using force when necessary
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Preferences
- Some college coursework
- One or more years' experience working in a security guard position with responsibility for routine interactions with the public and monitoring CCTV
- Comprehensive understanding of the culture of Rice University, the relationship of the University Police Department with the Rice University community, the mission of the university, and policies and procedures of the university and the department
- Ability to operate a utility vehicle in a safe manner
