POSITION SUMMARY
The head of security for McKelvey Hall reports to the chief operating officer and is responsible for the safety and security of The Hewitt School’s students, faculty, staff, and facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety and Security
Ensure the security and safety of faculty, staff, and students at The Hewitt School
Ensure the security of The Hewitt School’s buildings and property
Perform duties of fire and emergency drill conductor, fire safety director of the lower school, first responder/NYS emergency medical technician (EMT), fire guard and event safety officer, and duties of a licensed security professional
Conduct safety drills including lock down drills, school bus safety drills, evacuation and relocation drills, sheltering-in drills, and fire drills
Inspect the physical security of the School to ensure all entrances and exits are secured as appropriate
Maintain access control to Hewitt by interviewing visitors, establishing proper identification, directing visitors to sign a “visitor log” when appropriate, distributing visitor passes, and directing visitors to their destination
Train faculty, staff, and students on safety and security matters
Maintain crisis incident/evacuation equipment and ensure that they are in working order
Update, maintain, and be familiar with The Hewitt School Crisis Management Plan
Coordinate contingency plans for school trips and attend trips when necessary to assist in the safety and security of the students and faculty
Conduct safety lectures for all lower school students emphasizing safety regarding school trips, park visits, safety drills, and other situations as appropriate
Escort and safely cross classes to and from The Hewitt Theater at St. Jean and provide security for classes while at the theater
Conduct a visual vertical patrol of the school building upon arrival, at the end of the day and whenever necessary to ensure building security and safety
Liaise with neighbors and community groups to resolve issues relating to the School
Assist in providing security at Hewitt and other facilities and during special events such as plays, concerts, and other events
Recommend the posting of signs when appropriate to improve safety and security of the School community
Continuously conduct security assessments of the School and make recommendations to improve physical security (i.e. lighting, cameras, etc.)
Perform security/reception duties at the front desk
Monitor websites relating to school security and safety such as International Association of School Safety Professionals (IASSP)
Investigate acts of vandalism and thefts affecting the School and continually emphasize crime prevention measures
Liaise with the Police Department, Fire Department, the New York City Office of Emergency Management, and other emergency agencies when necessary
Communicate with other city and private agencies as necessary to alleviate problems at the School
Attend NYPD Shield conferences at police headquarters regarding current crime trends, security issues, and terrorism updates
Monitor dismissal at the end of the school day to ensure an orderly and safe departure of the students from the School
Supervise dismissal and assist in safely loading and unloading students on to school buses
Observe the security monitor and camera systems often to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff
Be familiar with the building alarm system and communicate with the alarm company as necessary to ensure the system is functioning properly and is upgraded as necessary
Review internet websites relating to security and public safety agencies such as the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, Homeland Security, National Weather Service, etc.
Distribute safety literature to faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and students during special events or holiday seasons
Assist in ensuring the safety of the students when on class trips or visits to other parts of Hewitt’s campus, Central Park, and additional destinations
Advise faculty, staff, parents, and guardians of safety issues
Ensure the security of valuable equipment such as laptops, cameras, televisions, spare cell phones, etc.
Prepare reports and memos as needed to document incidents affecting the School
Communicate by cell phone or portable radio with Hewitt administrators, security, faculty, and staff to improve efficiency, safety, and coordination of effort
Respond to emergencies involving the School and take appropriate action to restore normalcy
Distribute faculty and staff identification cards and OMNY cards
Manage the safe dismissal of students participating in the Hewitt after-school program
Be advised of “alerts” distributed by the Office of Emergency Management
Train part-time Hewitt after-school instructors on fire drill and evacuation procedures in the event of a fire drill or other emergency during after-school hours
Other duties as assigned by the chief operating officer
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Minimum 10 years of experience as a law enforcement officer
Expertise with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides)

SALARY RANGE
Starting Salary Range: $85,000 to $100,000 (salary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience and expertise)
