POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Government Affairs is responsible for all legislative and political affairs activities in the assigned area of the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) and designated surrounding counties; and, any state issues that impact those counties. These activities include: monitoring and responding to all relative legislative activities in the corresponding Counties and Municipalities; establishing a TAA presence and building on TAA political and business relationships in the designated areas; working with members on specific legislative issues; fostering campaign activities and relationships with specific elected officials through contributions and active participation in fundraising process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Keep abreast of issues which impact the multi-family industry; know who to call for assistance and information; ability to evaluate and communicate with appropriate parties as necessary.
Cultivate and maintain an active list of key members that own or manage properties in the assigned areas and have the ability to respond and influence specific pieces of legislation in a timely manner.
Build and develop relationships with lawmakers, agency staff, and other government officials and entities to further the interests of the Association.
Organize and activate TAA’s membership to participate in advocacy campaigns on legislative and regulatory issues in which the Association has an interest.
Develop written policy, position and response papers, and talking points concerning legislative issues and initiatives.
Compile market data for advocacy needs (i.e., how many apartment homes/units are in a local legislator’s district, etc.).
Serve as Staff Support for the Government Affairs Committee and TAA-PAC, as well as TAA’s affiliated 527 IE PAC, Triangle Government Alliance (TGA), and 501c4, Alliance for Progress in the Triangle (APT).
Establish and maintain relationships and coalitions with other trade associations, companies, individuals, technical experts, consulting experts and association legal counsel.
Proactively prepare for upcoming and potential legislative and regulatory issues that will impact our industry.
Field and assist with member inquiries related to corresponding local policy issues.
Keep Executive Director informed of key legislative and regulatory activities and inform the association membership through newsletters, e-mail correspondence and special alerts.
Write and update government affairs and advocacy-related content for the TAA Website, Social Media outlets, and The ApartMentor magazine.
Responsible for managing fundraising activities and membership participation in TAA-PAC, TGA, and APT, as well as filing pertinent lobbying and election reports for those entities, as required by law.
Maintain membership and actively participate in local Chambers of Commerce and other business- and industry-related organizations.
Perform all other jobs and duties as directed by the Executive Director (or management) and the Government Affairs Committee to advance the mission of the Association.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
3+ years managerial experience in Government Affairs, Public Policy, Public Relations or similar required
Track record of successful advocacy that has led to clear business and policy outcome
Demonstrated legal and legislative research, writing and communications skills
Experience in nonprofit management and/or trade association preferred
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Bachelor’s degree preferably in political science, social science or public administration
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Sedentary/stationary position. Must be able to remain in stationary position for periods (up to 50% of time) with occasional movement around office environment.
Requires frequent use of computer for extended viewing of computer screen (at least 50% of time) and repetitive use of a keyboard and some phone activity.
Position may be located remotely such as home-based office.
require frequent travel by car to attend legislative meetings in the Triangle Market (at least 35% of the time)
Occasion out of state travel for conferences may be required.
Communication skills: listening, verbal, written, presentations.
