Job DescriptionThe University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) - Operations has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director, IT Enterprise Application Administration. This position will be responsible for the overall management of a team of IT staff whose primary focus is on research computing for a research platform, specifically UMB's Secure Research Environment (SRE) and REDCap program. The SRE is a constantly growing and evolving collection of virtual computing resources hosted in Microsoft Azure. UMB has a large, multi-environment REDCap program that supports research across all schools.

Primary Duties:
- Manages a team of Application Administrators, Developers, and System Administrators to perform design, installation, configuration, administration, patching, upgrades, performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting, with a primary focus on research computing for a research platform.
- Manages a team of Application Administrators, Developers, and System Administrators to perform design, installation, configuration, administration, patching, upgrades, performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Represents this group in various campus initiatives.
- Provides leadership to Application Administrators, Developers, and System Administrators to coordinate with campus application functional and technical teams, as well as internal and external project implementation teams.
- Leads the design and maintenance of system security strategies, policies, and procedures working in coordination with enterprise security teams.
- Leads the development and modification of scalable architecture to support applications and infrastructure on IaaS and PaaS platforms.
- Works with stakeholders to evaluate and select the best cloud solutions for specific research and/or operational needs of the organization. Leads the implementation of recommended solution strategies.
- Follows established procedures and performs installation, configuration, administration, patching, upgrades, performance tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting of applications and systems.
- Manages multiple on-premises application systems including webservers, application servers, and report servers on Unix and Windows platforms.
- Takes lead to work with internal staff and vendors to create/update and communicate environment maintenance schedules, refresh schedules, and outages.
- Directs and performs regular maintenance including applying security patches for various on-premises and cloud applications and services.
- Works with Identity Management team to establish Single Sign-On to applications.
- Takes initiative in implementing security policies for cloud-based systems and on-premises applications.
- Supports SaaS administration tasks.
- Reviews system usage, exports metric data and provides reports.
- Manages Service Requests (SRs) with vendors to address issues.
- Creates and maintains thorough documentation to track configuration.
- Resolves user and group access issues to applications.
- Proactively works in performance improvements.
- Multitasks and independently leads/manages projects.
- Evaluates environment configuration, architecture, and administration tools, and applies consultative skills to assess and communicate technology alternatives and solutions at an expert level.
- Adheres to security administration best practices in Enterprise Cloud and On-Premises environments.
- Documents and communicates system changes to ensure best practices are adhered.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
Experience: Nine (9) years of system administration experience in a production Cloud Infrastructure environment and/or On-Premises Enterprise applications environment with multiple interfaces to other systems. Advanced experience in provisioning, patching, upgrading, and supporting Enterprise Cloud middleware Services preferred. Advanced experience in webservices, Java installation and support, middleware integration, system monitoring, and performance tuning and troubleshooting preferred.
Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of experience in work coordination, training, and daily oversight of others. Experience in providing leadership to system administrators preferred.
Certification/Licensure: N/A.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $170,000 - $180,000, Commensurate with education and experience
