The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Our mission is to protect individuals and assets at the university. We aim to prevent physical harm to our campus community through a multidisciplinary approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential threats. We are actively recruiting a Physical Security Associate Director to coordinate security vulnerability and threat assessments and implement safety improvements across the enterprise. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Physical Security with a dotted line to the Guest Services Director, who is the lead on Michigan Medicine security enhancements.
Lead real-time threat assessments and manage processes to evaluate potential threats and acts of violence affecting the university community. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop mitigation strategies and responses.
Create and manage educational programs on threat assessment, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and reporting for the university.
Oversee access control systems and conduct vulnerability analyses to enhance security protocols. Collaborate with stakeholders to address security concerns and integrate necessary support resources.
Assess risks and develop safety protocols in partnership with various departments to promote a secure environment for all community members.
Develop and implement strategic plans for personal safety programs that align with organizational goals.
Continuously assess and improve the effectiveness of security measures and adapt to evolving threats.
Serve as a subject matter expert on projects involving physical security systems and manage urgent threat concerns by assessing risks and developing safety protocols.
Cultivate positive relationships with stakeholders for threat analysis, action planning, and preventative measures.
Apply Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to reduce crime incidence and enhance campus safety and quality of life.
Administer surveys, threat assessments, and inspections for university facilities, including gap analysis and strategy development.
Participate in local, state, and federal advisory groups to stay informed on security-related developments and events.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, or a related field
Five years of operational and leadership knowledge and experience in investigations, personal safety, security management, law enforcement, intelligence, and protective investigations and/or threat assessment
Industry qualifications and/or certifications such as CPTED, Certified Threat Manager (CTM), NIOSH, workplace violence, etc.
CTM or commitment to become certified within 2 years of employment date. Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Physical Security Professional (PSP) certification with a commitment to becoming certified in both
Experience with integrated security systems, physical security, investigations, and workplace violence prevention/mitigation
Strong knowledge of safety regulations, threat assessment methodologies, and emergency response protocols
Ability to maintain confidentiality, handle sensitive information discreetly, and exercise sound judgment in high-pressure situations
All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
