Thompson Coburn LLP, a large full-service law firm with offices in eight (8) cities across the U.S., is seeking a full-time exempt Director of Information Security (DIS) to join its offices in Dallas, St. Louis, or Chicago. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Information Security is responsible for defining and executing the firm’s enterprise security strategy in alignment with business objectives and risk tolerance. This role provides cybersecurity leadership across the firm in partnership with the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, and Director of Compliance & Cybersecurity. The DIS will lead security operations, incident response, threat detection, compliance-driven technical implementation, and the overall maturity of the firm’s information security program. After an initial training period, this position is eligible for a hybrid-remote work schedule, with three (3) days per week of in-office presence.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversees the firm’s information security personnel, platforms, and processes to ensure operational effectiveness and continuous maturity.
Develops and manages strategic roadmaps for the firm’s cybersecurity program, including automation, AI-based threat detection, and zero trust security models.
Leads incident response efforts, manages security operations (SIEM, DLP, IAM), and oversees threat detection and endpoint security systems.
Collaborates with the Director of Data Compliance & Cybersecurity (DDCC) to implement compliance-driven security controls and technical safeguards aligned with frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and CMMC 2.0.
Leads vendor contract negotiations and manages all security-related MSPs, services, and agreements.
Establishes metrics and dashboards to monitor security operations performance, risk reduction, and compliance effectiveness.
Serves as the senior incident commander during critical cybersecurity events, coordinating efforts with forensics teams, legal counsel, and firm leadership.
Key Skills and Attributes
Deep knowledge of security technologies and frameworks including SIEM, DLP, IAM, firewalls, and encryption.
Demonstrated ability to align technical solutions with compliance obligations and business objectives.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust across departments and leadership levels.
Proven ability to lead security response, drive risk mitigation strategies, and ensure alignment with legal and client requirements.
Strong time management, attention to detail, and critical thinking capabilities.
Willingness to travel as needed and work outside of standard business hours when necessary.
Experience and Education Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Information Security preferred; Bachelor’s Degree in Information Security or related field, or equivalent experience required.
Minimum of 15 years of experience in information security management, including security operations, threat management, and incident response.
Minimum of 8 years in a Director-level information security role.
Prior leadership experience managing technical security teams (e.g., engineers and analysts).
Experience in vendor negotiations, security budgeting, and executive-level reporting.
CISSP, CISM, CEH, GIAC, or other relevant security credentials preferred
Compensation
For applicants that meet the experience requirements for the role and are physically based in Chicago, IL, the expected salary range is $210,000 - $255,000 annually upon commencement of employment. Starting salary will be determined on an individualized basis with consideration to prior experience and additional qualifications. This is in addition to a comprehensive benefit package offered by the Firm.
