General Responsibilities
To ensure the ethical, safe, and effective deployment and ongoing operation of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions across our large, leading hospital system. To bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI innovation and robust operational excellence, driving the execution of our AI governance framework while providing essential support to maintain, optimize, and troubleshoot hospital-wide AI projects. To serve as a proactive problem-solver, a skilled communicator, and a champion for responsible AI, dedicated to fostering strong relationships with clinical, technical, legal, and operational stakeholders.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Actively implements, monitors, and enforces the hospital's comprehensive AI governance policies, standards, and best practices across all AI initiatives.
2. Oversees AI-specific risk assessments, including bias detection, data privacy (HIPAA compliance), security vulnerabilities, and model explainability, ensuring mitigation strategies are in place.
3. Ensures all AI development and deployment adheres to internal ethical guidelines, industry best practices, and relevant healthcare regulations (e.g., FDA guidance for SaMD, HIPAA, state-specific privacy laws).
4. Ensures the development and maintenance of meticulous documentation for AI models, including purpose, datasets, performance metrics, validation methods, risk profiles, and impact assessments (i.e., "model cards"). Establishes, supports, and maintains the HSIS AI catalog of offerings. Supports internal and external audits related to AI compliance.
5. Educates and trains AI project teams, clinical users, and other stakeholders on AI governance principles, ethical considerations, and compliance requirements.
6. Serves as a key liaison to internal AI ethics committees, clinical review boards, and IT governance bodies, facilitating approvals and addressing concerns.
7. Implements and manages tools for monitoring of AI projects, coordinating necessary interventions.
8. Proactively identifies and escalates technical, logistical, regulatory, or organizational impediments that could hinder AI project progress or successful operation.
9. Collaborates with IT infrastructure, data engineering, and operations teams to ensure AI projects have access to tools, necessary computing resources, data pipelines, and deployment environments.
10. Assists in the operational assessment and integration of third-party AI solutions, ensuring they meet internal governance and operational standards.
11. Fosters strong, collaborative relationships with AI project owners across the hospital.
12. Serves as a critical bridge, translating complex technical AI project needs into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
13. Stays abreast of emerging AI technologies, governance frameworks, regulatory landscapes, and ethical standards, proposing operational improvements and policy enhancements.
14. Develops and presents reports on the health, performance, and compliance status of AI initiatives to senior leadership.
15. Contributes to the continuous refinement of the hospital's overall AI strategy and roadmap, ensuring operational realities and governance imperatives are integrated.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Health Informatics or a related field and five (5) years of progressive experience in AI/ML operations, data governance, project management or a related technical role. Experience in a healthcare environment (hospital, health system, or related medical industry) is highly preferred. Master's degree preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
Relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, AI Ethics, Cloud certifications related to ML operations, specific healthcare IT certifications) preferred.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Proven experience working directly with AI/ML systems through their full lifecycle (development, deployment, monitoring, maintenance.
Ability to implement or work within formal governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) frameworks.
Ability to manage stakeholder and cross-functional team collaboration.
Knowledge of AI/ML concepts, models (e.g., deep learning, NLP, computer vision), and their real-world applications.
Knowledge of MLOps principles and tools (e.g., model versioning, CI/CD for ML, model registries, monitoring frameworks).
Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP) used for AI workloads.
Knowledge of data governance principles, data privacy regulations (especially HIPAA), and data security best practices.
Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) for automation and data analysis is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical and governance concepts to diverse audiences.
Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport and trust. Knowledge of clinical workflows and healthcare IT systems (e.g., EHRs) preferred.
