The Risk and Insurance Manager coordinates, develops, and leads the insurance and risk management functions for Carleton College. This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining policies and procedures to effectively manage the College's operational, strategic, financial, and reputational risks. The manager will maintain and continuously improve the enterprise risk management process (ERM), support the development and documentation of risk mitigation initiatives, and ensure comprehensive insurance coverage for the College’s assets and activities. This role works across the organizational chart and serves as a trusted advisor to college leadership on risk assessment, insurance evaluation, and risk-related policy and practice.
Compensation:
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $75,800 and $89,100. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Insurance Management:
Routinely survey the risk environment of the College to ensure appropriate insurance coverage is maintained to mitigate identified risks.
Manage all aspects of the College’s insurance programs, including property, liability, auto, cyber security, global travel, student health and other necessary coverages.
Act as the primary liaison with third-party service providers, including insurance brokers, underwriters, and the insurance consortium.
Represent the College in the annual and ongoing negotiation of all insurance contracts and renewals.
Bind insurance coverage for the College annually.
Coordinate requests for Certificates of Insurance with the Business Office.
Oversee the administration, record-keeping, and compliance of insurance policies.
Manage and process insurance claims through to resolution, working with campus leadership, relevant departments and external providers.
Coordinate the annual evaluation and renewal of student health insurance in consultation with the Student Health and Counseling Center and the Human Resources Office.
Maintain insurance, premium, legal, loss, claims, and related risk management records.
Risk Mitigation and Compliance:
Lead, facilitate, and advise departments in designing and implementing risk management programs and controls.
Provide risk management assessment of new programs and activities and recommend effective risk controls or mitigation measures.
Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations related to risk and insurance.
Work with operational departments to administer campus-wide safety and risk programs and provide appropriate follow-up to address issues contributing to unsafe practices or environments.
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM):
Co-Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing administration of the College’s ERM framework with the Associate Vice President for Campus Services.
Identify, assess, and analyze potential risks across all areas of the institution, including business, academic, research, and operational activities.
Facilitate risk assessment workshops and collaborate with departments to identify and evaluate key risks.
Develop and maintain a college-wide risk register, documenting risks, potential impacts, and mitigation strategies.
Monitor and track the implementation of risk mitigation plans and their effectiveness.
Provide advisory services to identify and address operational, compliance, and strategic risks.
Develop and deliver education and training programs to cultivate a culture of risk awareness and promote appropriate risk mitigation activities across the College.
Prepare and present regular reports on the status of ERM initiatives and key risks to college leadership, Board of Trustees and other relevant committees.
Continuously monitor emerging risks and trends in higher education and recommend adjustments to the ERM program.
Business Continuity and Emergency Preparedness:
Work with operational and academic departments to contribute to the development and coordination of a college-wide business continuity plan to maintain functional operations during and/or following disruptive events.
Participate on college crisis management team and critical incident response working group as needed
Other Responsibilities:
Participate in the Campus Safety Committee
Contract review, collaborate with the Business office to identify potential contracting risks and determine appropriate insurance requirements.
Serve as document manager for all insurance and risk management functions, ensuring adherence to document retention guidelines.
Participate as a member of the University risk management and insurance association (URMIA). Attend regional and national conference as needed for ongoing professional development
Support Carleton’s Emergency Operations Plan, including department Continuity of Operations plans.
Responsible for the appropriate use of high-risk data and close collaboration with the cyber security team
May be required to serve as an authorized college driver.
Undertake special projects and assignments as directed by the Associate Vice President for Campus Services.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receives general direction from the Associate Vice President for Campus Services, with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action in managing the risk and insurance functions.
May supervise administrative or support staff as the department evolves.
Education/Experience/Skills:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in business, risk management, insurance, or a related field.
Candidates with 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, insurance, audit, compliance or related experience in these fields will be considered for Grade 12.
Candidates with 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, insurance, audit, compliance or related experience in these fields will be considered for Grade 13.
Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and managing an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework.
Experience managing a comprehensive range of insurance programs, including property, liability, and workers' compensation.
Experience in managing relationships with insurance brokers, underwriters, and other third-party service providers.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for diverse audiences.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with risk management information systems.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in a related field.
Professional certification in risk management (e.g., CRM, ARM, ERM).
Experience working in higher education or a similar complex organization.
