University Security Services invites applications for a Police Officer assigned to the Protective Security Section.
Protective Security is a specialized function that encompasses executive protection, special events, intelligence coordination, and asset protection. All aspects of protective security must be coordinated for efficient resource deployment and information sharing.
This position reports to the Police Sergeant of Protective Security and provides support in all areas of protective security. It requires flexibility in working various hours and days based on the community's needs and the unit's responsibilities.
This position is designated as a long-term special assignment position described in the Special Assignments and Positions Memorandum of Understanding. This position is also designated as having a 'Variable work schedule' as described in the POAM UMLEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Pay Range Information
The pay range for this position is $58,947.20 to $89,586.00 per year, based on education and experience. Additional step pay increases may apply based on education, certifications, and experience as outlined in the POAM bargaining agreement.
Provide executive protection for university and visiting dignitaries
Transport personnel to and from on and off campus locations
Provide security for special events, on and off campus for varying durations of time
Assist with the development of operational plans for special events and executive protection details
Assist with investigations related to executive protection, working in collaboration with UMPD Criminal Investigations Unit and other external law enforcement agencies
Assist with scheduling special events, creating corresponding detail sheets, and processing billing for DPSS services rendered
Attend regular meetings and communicate with the Athletic Department, U-M President's Office, University Development, Facilities and Operations and Government Relations representatives
Perform support tasks of an independent and confidential nature relating to executive protection
May provide support and technical assistance to other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, security agencies and peer partners for strategic intelligence and special events
Perform necessary research to aid the completion of various reports, including but not limited to strategic intelligence reports, and other investigations as assigned
Collaborate and participate in campus committees
Travel as necessary, including out of state, as a part of a protective detail or advance team
Monitor and review security camera footage to further investigations and aid protective security
Effectively support the mission and goals and prioritize assignments and deadlines
Must be able to work flexible hours according to the needs of the community and assigned duties
Demonstrated leadership and creative problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
Other duties as assigned such as providing executive protection for university and visiting dignitaries
Education and Experience:
High school or GED equivalent + 2 years of relevant police/military experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable), OR
Associate degree; completion of an accredited police training academy or training + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)
Proven ability to work independently and multitask
History of working effectively as part of a team and independently
Considerable knowledge of state and federal law
Proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies and diverse audiences
Maintain compliance with DPSS appearance and grooming standards
History of customer focus, teamwork, and creativity while working in a deadline-driven environment
Demonstrated expertise in protective security operations and advanced investigative techniques is desirable
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong commitment to working with students, staff, faculty, and members of other departments across the University
Willingness to partner with those holding diverse points of view to build consensus and achieve goals and objectives
Ability to perform in a fast-paced security environment where confidentiality is critical
Possess the ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information in strictest confidence
You must pass a comprehensive law enforcement background investigation and drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
All members of DPSS are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
This position may work with and/or support systems that maintain or process sensitive institutional data as defined by university policy. Successful candidates must comply with federal, state, and local law and/or university policies or agreements that require the university to implement specific privacy and security safeguards including, but not limited to: CJIS, HIPAA, and FERPA.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
