The Office of Government Affairs (OGA) coordinates and facilitates Stanford University's interactions with all levels of government, as well as its relationship with neighboring communities. The work of OGA supports the university's academic mission of teaching and research by serving as the primary point of contact between the university and our partners in federal, state and local governments. OGA's Washington, DC Office promotes the interests of the University and SLAC through contact with public officials, involvement with research organizations, tracking of pertinent legislation, and direct advocacy on a wide variety of issues from funding for the basic sciences to immigration.
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is a Department of Energy National Lab managed and operated by Stanford in the heart of Silicon Valley. SLAC explores how the universe works at its biggest, smallest and fastest scales, and invents and operates scientific tools to enable that pursuit, including with partners from around the world. Stanford University is seeking a Senior Director to manage the federal government affairs for SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Federal Relations, the Senior Director works to advance SLAC's federal priorities, including leading the day-to-day management and coordination of activities and relationships with federal legislative and agency officials, Stanford and SLAC staff, and other related DOE National Laboratory organizations.
This role will be located in Washington, DC and will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (at least 2 days per week on-site). May require working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.This role will also have occasional business travel to Stanford and SLAC in Palo Alto and Menlo Park, CA.
Your primary responsibilities include:
In coordination with the AVP, develop and implement federal education and legislative advocacy strategies that advance the mission of SLAC and Stanford University.
Develop, advance and maintain positive working relationships with key Members of Congress, legislative and agency staff, as well as SLAC leaders and staff. Communicate effectively with these constituencies, including providing federal audiences with selected, proactive, and timely information about SLAC's positions and interests.
Research, analyze, and monitor federal budgets as well as legislative and regulatory activity of interest to SLAC on DOE National Laboratory policy issues, including identifying, attending, and reporting on congressional legislative hearings, briefings, and other events.
Draft position papers, statements, presentations, and memorandums on relevant issues for communication to both internal and external audiences.
Identify, address, and mitigate unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between Stanford & SLAC and other constituencies, keeping relevant stakeholders appropriately advised and informed on a timely basis.
Actively participate in relevant DOE National Laboratory related associations, coalitions and advocacy groups on behalf of the university and SLAC.
Assist in the coordination of visits of federal officials and policymakers to SLAC.
Other duties as assigned.
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and eight years relevant experience or a combination of education and experience. Must have functional experience in federal government and/or working with Federal agencies or Capitol Hill.
Experience with DOE National Laboratories is strongly preferred.
Substantial experience in a government relations environment, focusing on federal government affairs is desirable.
Collaborative team player with the ability to diplomatically solve problems and build key relationships.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively educate and interact with internal and external audiences.
Advanced skills to read, interpret, understand, and respond to pending and proposed federal budgets and legislation, including skills to write effective position statements.
The expected pay range for this position is $198,637 to $245,453 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
