Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Insurance & Risk Financing will establish a disciplined and sustainable strategy for evaluating, monitoring, controlling and holistically financing risks to protect the system’s balance sheet from unexpected volatility and maintain risk levels within the corporation’s tolerance for risk. The Senior Director will identify and leverage opportunities across traditional and alternative risk financing mechanisms, including managing the business operations of Hartford HealthCare Indemnity Services, Ltd. (HHCISL), to mitigate uncertainty and achieve an optimal balance between risk retention and risk transfer.
Key Accountabilities:
Lead and oversee the placement of all commercial Property, Casualty and Management Liability insurance coverage of Hartford Healthcare (HHC) and its employees. Direct brokers to develop strategies that optimize renewal outcomes with a proper balance between risk retention and commercial risk transfer and leverage HHC’s captive and other risk retention strategies that effectively manage financial risk within HHC’s tolerance for risk
Lead all functions and strategic operation of Hartford Healthcare Indemnity Services Ltd. (HHCISL), HHC’s Bermuda insurance company including managing the company’s budget and P&L and evaluating and deploying strategies that optimize HHCISL’s use and value to Hartford Healthcare
Monitor risk trends through data analytics and other risk management information resources to identify sources of adverse risk trends and lead systemwide initiatives that will serve to reduce, eliminate or control such risks
Ensure that all covered claims are recorded and reported in a timely manner to ensure commercial and captive insurance responds as intended. Coordinate with Legal/Claim in the management of major insurance losses across the system including establishing and maintaining case reserves on retained losses consistent with HHC’s reserving policy
Manage a large and growing independent physician insurance program for affiliated physician practice underwritten by HHCISL. Develop and execute strategies to solicit/expand participation in the Program as an alternative to competing commercial insurance markets
Serve as the insurance and risk subject matter expert for business operations on contracts terms with vendors, consultants, medical providers, leases and other similar contracts
Manage the department budget which includes premium and claim projections
Qualifications:
Master’s degree is required. In lieu of a Master’s degree a Bachelor’s degree along with CPCU, ARM, RPLU or other comparable insurance-related experience and/or professional designations will be considered
Fifteen plus years in commercial insurance, risk management or insurance broker
Five plus years of progressive leadership experience
Strong leadership with a proven ability to collaboratively build consensus and lead cross-functional teams to achieve results
Exceptional communication skills and ability to effectively present at the highest levels of the organization
Strong analytical and project management skills
Ability to distill down and communicate complex analytical or financial concepts to individuals with varying levels of insurance and risk knowledge
