Position Summary:
Access Control and Security Camera Systems Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of advanced electronic access control systems. This role ensures the integrity and reliability of physical security infrastructure across all facilities. The technician serves as a subject matter expert, providing guidance to junior technicians, coordinating with vendors, supporting system integration efforts with video surveillance, alarm, and building automation systems. The position requires a deep understanding of security technology, system programming, wiring standards, and compliance with safety and regulatory codes.
Ideal Candidate Statement: The ideal candidate is a highly skilled and detail-oriented security systems professional with a strong background in the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of access control and CCTV systems. They possess a deep understanding of physical security principles, electronic security technologies, and network infrastructure.
Workplace Requirements This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person across the Rice University campus, Monday - Friday for 8 hours per day or as needed to maintain operational continuity. Per
Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Proposed Hiring Range: $30.34 - $32.69 per hour
*This is a non-exempt (bi-weekly) position under FLSA and eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
- Associate Degree
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.
- 4+ years' experience in access control and/or security camera functions
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

Essential Functions:
- Serves as an experienced technician for Access Control Devices and the IP based CCTV system components
- Installs, repairs and maintains a variety of access control controllers including Cbord Squadron and Mercury, various types of card readers including magstripe, HID prox, and Bio readers, electromechanical locks, security cameras such as AXIS Communication, Cisco ISE webtools, Hexagon Cayuga VMS (formerly Qognify), etc., and other security related systems in accordance to the University and relevant city / state codes
- Bypass devices for contract work and/or service deficiencies
- Train designated personnel in operating procedures to minimize user error
- Maintain accurate and detailed service and inspection data through entry to a computerized work order management system on a daily basis
- Ensures strict confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data, including access logs, surveillance footage, and system configurations. Adhere to university polices and best practices for data protection
- Evaluates, diagnoses, troubleshoots security systems and associated equipment and takes corrective action for repairs
- Develops and provides complex training for users
- Performs upgrades and additions to security systems and associated equipment to increase functionality and improved usability
- Collaborates with project leaders and other trades regarding plans for projects / work orders
- Updates constituents regarding procedures and / or status of work flow / orders as to make informed decisions, taking appropriate action and / or complying with environmental and safety regulations
- Prepares complex documentation to show compliance with city / state codes and regulations and conveys to the appropriate person
- Responds to emergency safety / security situations during or after hours, as required
- Transports equipment and materials to various work sites on / off campus
- Maintain equipment, tools and supplies. Coordinate ordering of needed equipment, tools and supplies
- Oversee access control and/or security camera contractor assisting in pulling cable, installing devices or anything else required to install the access control system and/or security cameras to proper national/local codes
- Supervise performance of access control and security camera contract vendors
- Frequent contact with security, access control vendors and electrical contractors to exchange information
- Performs all other duties as assigned
