The Director of Data and Technology serves as the strategic and operational leader for data management, technology infrastructure, and digital initiatives at APS. This role combines deep technical expertise with proven leadership skills to drive innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and support the society’s mission through technology-enabled and data-informed solutions. The ideal candidate will excel at translating complex technical concepts for a wide range of stakeholders while building collaborative partnerships across the organization.
Essential Functions

1. Strategic Leadership • Lead the development and execution of comprehensive data and technology strategies that align with organizational goals and advance the association's scientific mission. • Partner with APS leadership to identify emerging technology opportunities and assess their potential impact on member services, publications initiatives, and operational effectiveness. • Champion digital transformation initiatives that enhance member engagement and streamline internal processes. • Support data and technology literacy among staff and volunteers. • Devise and establish security and acceptable use policies and systems to support the implementation of effective strategies and ensure the strategies are communicated and understood by all users.
2. Data Management and Analytics • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust data architecture supporting membership management, publication systems, and business intelligence needs. • Maintain and continuously improve data governance frameworks that ensure accuracy, security, and compliance with relevant regulations while maximizing data accessibility for decision-making. • Lead analytics initiatives that provide actionable insights to support strategic planning and program evaluation.
3. Technology Infrastructure & Operations • Manage organization-wide technology systems including cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity protocols, and software applications that support daily operations. • Collaborate with managed service providers and technical resource vendors and service providers to optimize system performance, negotiate contracts, and ensure cost-effective technology solutions. • Oversee technology budgets and resource allocation to maximize return on investment.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration, Project Management & Execution • Partner closely with staff teams and volunteers to understand technological needs and deliver solutions. • Serve as a trusted advisor to department heads on technology-related decisions and process improvements. Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation, professional growth, and knowledge sharing. • Facilitate cross-departmental projects that leverage technology to enhance member value and operational efficiency from conception through implementation, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards and timeline requirements. • Develop project plans, manage resources, and communicate progress to all organizational levels. • Remain current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in nonprofit technology management. • Build relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and peer organizations to identify collaboration opportunities and innovative solutions.
Skills/Abilities
1. Demonstrated success and proficiency in database management systems, data warehousing, and business intelligence tools. 2. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and modern web technologies. 3. Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, data privacy regulations, and compliance frameworks. 4. Familiarity with membership management systems, CRM platforms, and nonprofit technology ecosystems. 5. Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities with experience presenting to executive leadership. 6. Proven record building and leading high-performing technical teams. 7. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate effectively across teams with varying levels of technical acumen. 8. Experience translating complex technical concepts into accessible language for non-technical audiences. 9. Experience managing multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities and resource constraints. 10. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with attention to detail and quality.

This position is a full-time, Exempt position. APS offers a competitive salary with excellent benefits, including a 403(b)-retirement plan; holidays, generous annual and sick leave; medical, dental, and vision insurance plans; flexible spending; and life and short-and long-term disability insurance. Where will you work? We are a remote-first organization. We do have office space and there will be times when an in-person division meeting or staff meeting will be held at the office. Some staff work in the office 2 – 3 times per week, others come in once a month. The key is to identify with supervisors what works best for staff to produce the best outcomes.The APS office is based in Rockville, MD (Washington, DC metro area), and candidates must reside within 75 miles of the office to be considered. Occasional in-person attendance for one-day meetings is required.

Education and Experience
1. BSc/BA in computer science, engineering, data analysis, data science, information systems, or related technical field; master’s degree will be a plus. 2. Minimum 8 years of progressive technology leadership experience. At least 2 years in nonprofit or association management is a plus. 3. Previous experience in scientific, research, or academic organizations preferred. 4. Professional certifications in project management (PMP, CSM) or technology specializations preferred. 5. Experience with scientific publishing systems or association management systems preferred. 6. Must reside within 75 miles of the Rockville, MD office to be considered. Occasional in-person attendance for one-day meetings is required.
