The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic research fellow to lead our climate portfolio and advance the mission of centering women in all global policy and debates on climate change. The Fellow will be responsible for shaping the Institute's climate research agenda and producing policy analysis that responds to the challenges and opportunities found at the intersection of gender, climate, and security issues.

Drawing on a background in gender-responsive approaches to climate security, the Fellow will utilize their expertise to track, analyze, and write on global policies and trends, and will serve as the focal point for the Institute's engagement related to climate change. Reporting to the Director of Research and working closely with the Director of Policy, the Climate Researcher will envision, craft, and execute research projects and translate research findings for diverse stakeholders in ways that generate policy impact.

The ideal candidate will have expertise and rigorous research experience on the gendered impacts of climate change, particularly in conflict-affected and fragile contexts, and awareness of the corresponding policy implications and solutions for these challenges. The Fellow must be familiar with current climate security policies and debates, as well as global climate policy and diplomacy efforts, including working knowledge of the UNFCCC and COP.

Candidates must have a Master's degree and experience designing and leading research projects informed by a gender analysis. In addition to technical expertise on gender and climate security, a demonstrated ability to write for policy audiences, including leveraging an evidence-based case for policy impact, is essential. Experience managing research projects and budgets, supervising junior staff and/or students, and engaging with policy, practitioner, and academic communities is highly desirable.

Duties and responsibilities of the Research Fellow include, but are not limited to:

Policy-Oriented Research

• 
  Shape the strategic vision for the Institute's climate research portfolio and maintain excellent knowledge of the gender and climate policy landscape.
  
• 
  Identify knowledge gaps to produce forward-thinking research at the intersection of WPS and climate change.
  
• 
  Design and undertake short and mid-term research projects.
  
• 
  Produce original research reports, policy briefs, and other publications aimed at policy impact.
  
• 
  Contribute climate and gender policy analysis to GIWPS WPS Conflict Tracker and other Institute research and policy initiatives as appropriate.
  

Informing Policy and Practice

• 
  Serve as the main POC for GIWPS climate portfolio and represent the Institute as a subject matter expert at key convenings, policy fora, and practitioner working groups.
  
• 
  Review all GIWPS climate-related content across research, communications, and policy and programs teams.
  
• 
  Collaborate with teams across the Institute to shape and undertake GIWPS climate events and policy advocacy efforts, including writing concept notes as needed.
  
• 
  Develop timely policy-relevant analysis in response to current events and developments in the field and disseminate GIWPS climate research and policy recommendations through academic, policy, and practitioner communities.
  
• 
  Work with the Communications Team to ensure regular coverage of GIWPS' climate activities and expertise.
  

Project & Relationship Management

• 
  Work with the Director of Research and Director of Finance to manage donor relationships, project budgets, and grant reporting.
  
• 
  Grow and sustain relationships with key stakeholders.
  
• 
  Develop funding proposals and respond to funding opportunities as needed.
  
• 
  Manage administrative duties for the GIWPS climate portfolio, including reporting and documenting activities for donors, knowledge management, briefing key staff on climate-related meetings and events, and answering day-to-day queries.
  

Qualifications

• 
  Master's degree or Ph.D. in political science, international relations, international development, environmental studies, sustainability, gender studies, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, sociology, or related field.
  
• 
  At least 5-7 years of relevant research and policy experience.
  
• 
  Demonstrated subject matter expertise in climate change and gender, and strong knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security field.
  
• 
  Demonstrated knowledge of key actors, institutions, and processes relating to climate change and gender.
  
• 
  Proven ability to write effectively for a policy audience, in addition to scholarly and practitioner communities.
  
• 
  Proven track record of establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships and a strong professional network in this technical space.
  
• 
  Proficiency with research methods and design, including human subjects research; ability to conduct an intersectional gender analysis.

The preferred start date is September 1, 2025. Candidates will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The successful applicant will be hired as a Georgetown University Research Fellow, which is a full-time non-tenure line faculty position with benefits. Salary will range from $65,000-$85,000, depending on experience. The initial contract will be for one year, with an opportunity to renew, depending on performance.
